Big Idea

Some teachers are reluctant to switch to Standards Based Grading because they feel that SBG is less rigorous even though over two-thirds of my students actually found SBG to be equal if not more rigorous than traditional grading. Today, I’m sharing 3 things I do to make SBG more rigorous.

Episode Notes

Briefly, here are 3 things I do to make Standards Based Grading more rigorous:

  1. Get students to go deeper. For exam questions, instead of just marking for correctness in a student’s response, I ask for a greater depth of explanation. This fits well with skills like communication or argumentation, which I can assess along a proficiency scale from emerging to extending.
  2. Be creative with your questions. If there’s something you want to assess students on – for example, their ability to analyze trends – then find a creative way to apply and assess that skill.
  3. Give projects where students are required to iterate and demonstrate improvement. This requires creative thinking from students and for them to produce something that works – both of which are difficult tasks.
